What Is a HEPA Filter and How Does It Work?

A HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter traps fine airborne particles such as dust, pollen, mould spores and particles that carry microorganisms. Under the US standard, a True HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles. Under the European standard EN 1822 / ISO 29463, filters are graded at their most penetrating particle size (MPPS).

The filter media works through three mechanisms:

  • Interception: particles following the airflow touch a fibre and stick to it.
  • Impaction: larger particles cannot follow the air around a fibre and hit it directly.
  • Diffusion: the smallest particles move erratically and collide with fibres.

A HEPA filter performs well only when it is correctly selected, sealed and maintained. A pre-filter upstream protects the HEPA filter and extends its service life.

Types of HEPA Filters We Supply in Chakan

Type Efficiency / Design Typical Use
H13 HEPA filter Minimum 99.95% at MPPS Hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceutical AHUs, commercial HVAC
H14 HEPA filter Minimum 99.995% at MPPS Operation theatres, pharmaceutical production, critical cleanrooms
Mini-pleat HEPA filter Closely spaced pleats, large media area in a compact frame Cleanroom terminal units, FFUs, AHUs
Deep-pleat HEPA filter Deeper pleats with separators and rigid frame Industrial ventilation, central AHUs, higher airflow
Box-type HEPA filter Media enclosed in a rigid frame or housing Ceiling systems, AHUs, industrial filtration
Gel-seal HEPA filter Gel channel seal to limit bypass at the mounting frame Pharmaceutical and controlled-environment cleanrooms
V-bank HEPA filter Multiple packs in a V arrangement Commercial and industrial AHUs needing higher airflow

All filters are available in GI or aluminium frames, in standard and custom sizes. For ceiling-mounted installations, we also supply HEPA terminal boxes. For dusty plant air, we also supply pre-filters and pocket filters to sit upstream of the HEPA stage.

Where HEPA Filters Are Used Around Chakan

Chakan MIDC is one of India's largest automotive and engineering clusters, and it also hosts food, FMCG, packaging, electronics, pharmaceutical and warehousing units. HEPA filtration is typically specified for controlled areas within these plants, such as:

  • Controlled assembly and electronics areas: low-particle zones for sensitive components, often using FFUs or ceiling HEPA modules.
  • Metrology, inspection and quality labs: stable, clean air for precision measurement and testing.
  • Pharmaceutical and medical device units: cleanrooms, laminar air flow units, pass boxes, sampling booths and dispensing areas.
  • Food, beverage and FMCG units: sensitive filling, packing and preparation zones, where the design calls for HEPA.
  • Packaging units: clean zones for products that need low contamination, such as pharma and food packaging.
  • Industrial cleanrooms and controlled rooms: supply air through terminal boxes or FFUs.
  • Canteens, offices and commercial blocks: final-stage filtration in central HVAC where better air quality is needed.

HEPA filters are not typically used for general shop-floor dust, paint booths or welding fume, which have their own filtration designs. The right grade and system depend on your applicable standard, such as ISO 14644 cleanroom class or GMP requirements. Your designer or validation team should confirm both.

Replacing HEPA Filters in a Running Plant

  1. Record the existing filter details: size, depth, frame, seal type (gasket or gel) and rated airflow. A photo of the nameplate helps.
  2. Check pressure drop trends so you can plan replacement before airflow drops or a validation date arrives.
  3. Order ahead of your shutdown window. We make custom sizes, and made-to-order filters take longer than stock sizes.
  4. Plan testing after installation. Cleanrooms typically need an integrity or leak test and a particle count check before the area returns to use.

How to Choose the Right HEPA Filter

  1. Filter grade: choose H13 or H14 to match your required air cleanliness.
  2. Airflow: match the filter's rated airflow to your AHU or terminal box.
  3. Pressure drop: check initial resistance so your fan can handle it as the filter loads.
  4. Size and construction: pick mini-pleat, deep-pleat, box-type, gel-seal or V-bank to suit your housing and space.
  5. Sealing: confirm that the gasket or gel seal fits your frame to limit bypass.
  6. Maintenance: plan for pre-filters, pressure monitoring and easy replacement.

Documents to ask for before buying: the filter's efficiency grade, dimensions, rated airflow, initial pressure drop and the test report or certificate for the grade claimed.

FAQs: HEPA Filters in Chakan

They remove fine airborne particles in hospitals, laboratories, cleanrooms, pharmaceutical units, food and packaging plants, industrial plants and commercial HVAC systems.

Not for general production areas. HEPA filtration is used in specific controlled zones, such as electronics assembly, metrology rooms, quality labs and cleanrooms. Your process requirements and HVAC designer will decide where it is needed.

We supply H13 and H14 filters in mini-pleat, deep-pleat, box-type, gel-seal and V-bank designs, plus HEPA terminal boxes, pre-filters and pocket filters, delivered from our Pune facility.

Yes. We can make filters to your size, frame material (GI or aluminium) and grade. Share your drawing or existing filter details for a quote.

No. Washing or cleaning can damage the media and the seal. Clean or replace the pre-filters more often to protect the HEPA filter.

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on dust load, airflow, operating hours and pre-filtration. Facilities usually replace a filter when its pressure drop reaches the limit set by the manufacturer, or if an integrity test fails.

Replace it if the pressure drop reaches the manufacturer's final limit, airflow falls, the filter is visibly damaged, or a leak test fails.

Price depends on grade, size, construction, frame material and quantity. Send us your requirements for a quotation.
